The early Ferrari cars were all based on the V12 engine developped in 1947 by Ing. Gioacchino Colombo with Luigi Bazzi. The first edition was the 1500 cc engine of the Ferrari 125S. The designation of the early Ferrari corresponds to the cubic capacity of one cylinder. Cylinder heads, block and crankcase were cast of aluminium alloy. Cast iron wet cylinder liners were set in and maintained in compression by the cylinder heads. The engine had a single overhead camshaft. The Ferrari V12 engine was typically connected to a five ratio gearbox

Gradually, the 60° Colombo V12 engine was updated for higher performance cars to 166, 195 or 212 specifications.

The Ferrari 225S is the ultimate evolution prepared for the 1952 sports racing cars championship. The 2.715 cc engine developed 210 hp at 7.200 rpm with three Weber carburettors. Twenty one models were produced with spyder or berlinetta bodies made by different coachbuilders. Six berlinettas are reported with Vignale body made under the design of Giovanni Michelotti. Each body has specific features corresponding to customers demand.

The chassis from the beginning is a ladder type structure made of two parallel oval section tubes connected by cross-members and transverse elements to ensure rigidity and allow the installation of the front independent suspension and the rear live axle.
